MASTERPLAN BRIEF
MASTERPLAN BRIEF
Vision for the site set out by the group:
A destination for the arts with culture that reflects the trading and maritime heritage of the area whilst providing high quality green spaces that capitalise on biodiversity for all whilst meeting net zero requirements.

Masterplan Principles
The vision works alongside the masterplan principles, for this area it is to create a sense of place. For people to meet, work and enjoy. Whilst keeping them wanting to come back. The area will be all inclusive, offering jobs, homes and places to enjoy for all classes. Being a mixed use area, to a create a lively space throughout the day and evening. The area will be well connected and shall support competitive economic value. The area will also offer a place of learning, with the aim to connect the historical context of the site to the new regeneration. The area shall support businesses and offer new areas for businesses. Allowing more job opportunities to bring people to the area. The regeneration, should positively effect the community, with as little displacement as possible. With aim to increase green and blue infrastrcuture.

Implementation Element

In relation to creating a safe post covid city, I believe that the royal docks should take on the super blocks concept as put into Practice in Barcelona. The super block concept relates to creating a safer neighbourhood where cars are not permitted. This helps to create a more environmental approach as it encourages sustainable movement. In terms of safety, it means that children are able to play on the streets and create that neighbourhood feel. However, for safety ambulances and police cars are still allowed through.
Focus
The main focus for the project is one of the historically listed buildings. The building will be turned into an art museum that will focus on the history of the surrounding area as well as the docks. This relates to the group vision for the area as it creates a destination for the area that includes art, whilst educating people on the maritime heritage. To create a safe space for a post covid city, the museum will be designed internally into a one direction flow. To allow people the space that they need to social distance and enjoy the art safely.

The vision and masterplan principles develop different ideas regarding regeneration. This is because the type of regeneration is based and factored upon what is needed for the area. The first type of regeneration that could be used for the area is Holistic. Holistic regeneration focusses on the area being mixed tenure, whilst having the main focus be the social benefits through the uplift off the land. This supports what the vision entails and would be a good approach to the regeneration. Another approach of regeneration would be post war regeneration. This is because it massively concentrates on culture and the re - use of existing buildings. For example the listed buildings that used to be the Docks offices. Through harnessing the culture for the area it can help to educate people and create a sense of place. Which falls inline with what the vision is for the area.
The vision helps to develop initial ideas for the site. From the vision developers are able to create their ideas to fit into what they area is set out to be and look like. Whilst knowing what the aims are not just through what buildings are wanted, but what infrastructure is needed, what the environmental, economic and social needs are. To be able to use the buildings to shape the on going future of the site. With how the development will effect the way that people move within the area.
